(Vancouver) The sentence was handed down for Hong Kong’s “47 Case”, with 45 receiving sentences of four to ten years imprisonment. According to the latest news, everyone within the Chinese diaspora unanimously expressed their anger over this. On Saturday, November 23rd, the Vancouver Society in Support of Democratic Movement (VSSDM) held a protest outside the Chinese Consulate of Vancouver and, amidst heavy rain, attracted a turnout of some 200, to join in the chorus of condemnation of the cruelty and harshness of the Chinese communists toward the righteous and the good, and to exhort Hong Kong’s government to stop its prosecution of and to release all political prisoners.

The event was moderated by VSSDM president Edmund Leung who, in his statement, pointed out that the sentencing of these ordinary citizens of Hong Kong was and is the result of an abuse of the Beijing-imposed National Security Law, with the sole desire to incriminate all the accused, with the purpose of smothering the first efforts of the democratic movements of Hong Kongers whilst still in the cradle.

In reality, this sentencing is not just about Benny Tai, and it is not just about Owen Chow Ka-Shing, nor is it merely about Gwyneth Ho Kwai-Lam. This sentencing is a one of the 7 million people of Hong Kong, a sentencing of the conscience of Hong Kong. This is a sentencing by the Hong Kong government of all the pro-democracy citizens, a death sentence against the Hong Kong’s freedom, and a death knell for the evolution of democracy in Hong Kong.

November 19th, the day Hong Kong’s court handed down its sentence, has become a day of infamy, of shame, for Hong Kong.

VSSDM’s declaration also exhorts Canada and other members of the international community of nations, and demands that they exert pressure upon the Hong Kong government and its Beijing masters, to unconditionally release all these innocent political prisoners.

Afterwards, Georgina, VSSDM member of the standing committee, read out all the names of the 47 as well as their sentences, and led all present to declaim the slogan, “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times!”

Giggs, who was jailed for almost two years because of his participation in Hong Kong’s democracy movement, also spoke at Saturday’s event, and declared that among the 47, about half are his personal friends. He said all of them had a choice, including the option of saying words acceptable to the Chinese communists, but they all chose the road of taking action to awaken the people of Hong Kong.

Giggs added that his experienced mixed feelings upon hearing the sentences. He fully realizes the difficulties involved in walking the road toward democracy, and he feels that he must exercise patience, and keep to his beliefs, as well as awaiting all these people to be released from prison, so that they could be reunited. At the same time, he wishes that the many supporters on the outside would let all the incarcerated know that they are not the only ones imprisoned, but that many of us are walking along with them.

While Giggs was speaking, the rain started to fall more and more heavily. But those who gathered did not disperse because of inclement weather, but remained until the termination of the event.

In addition, a representative the Chinese Democratic Party also spoke at the gathering.
