Each year, communities around the world gather to remember the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre and to reaffirm the universal values of freedom, democracy, and human dignity.
In 2026, we invite the public in Vancouver to join a series of commemorative events to honour those who stood for democracy and to ensure that history is neither forgotten nor erased.
At a time when public remembrance is increasingly restricted in places like Hong Kong, gathering in remembrance carries even deeper meaning. Since September 2021, authorities have detained activists—including Chow Hang-tung and Lee Cheuk-yan—on charges of “inciting subversion of state power.” Their so-called crime: commemorating the June 4 crackdown. Their trial is ongoing in 2026, following more than four years of detention without bail, and they face up to 10 years in prison.
We stand in solidarity with those who can no longer openly mourn, and we affirm that remembering is not a crime.
