Vancouver Society in Support of Democratic Movement: Series of Events Commemorating the 35th Anniversary of June 4th

2024 marks the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the 10th anniversary of the Umbrella Movement, and the 5th anniversary of the Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. This year, the Vancouver Society in Support of Democratic Movements will continue to uphold memory, reject forgetting, and organize a series of commemorative events.

1. Feb 17: "Freedom to Read in New Hong Kong Symposium"

Discussing Hong Kong's freedom of reading, the fragmentation of domestic and international media, and the war between memory and forgetting.

Time: 2pm

Location: Holiday Inn Vancouver Centre (Broadway) 711 W Broadway, Vancouver.

3. April 27 (Saturday): Symposium "From 1989 to 2019 : Hong Kong’s Resistance, Trauma, and Memory"

4. May 11 (Saturday): Symposium

Speaker: Zhou Fengsuo, Student Leader of the 1989 Tiananmen Movement

5. May 25 (Saturday): Symposium

"Memory as Resistance: From Tiananmen to Hong Kong"

  • Speaker: Rowena He, Scholar of June 4th unafraid of repression; Denied entry by the Hong Kong government and subsequently dismissed by CUHK

6. May 26 (Sunday): Democracy Walk

Assembly Point: Granville Loop Park (Granville St & W 5th Ave)

Assembly Time: 2:00pm, the march will begin at 2:30pm and conclude at the Chinese Consulate-General at 3380 Granville St (located at W 16th Ave).

7. June 2 (Sunday):

Laying Wreaths to the Goddess of Democracy to commemorate thousands of students and civilians who died in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

a) Time: 10:00am - 10:30am

Location: Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 3789 Royal Oak Ave., Burnaby

b) Joint Wreath-Laying Ceremony with UBC Alma Mater Society at the Goddess of Democracy.

Time: 12:30pm - 1:00pm

Location: UBC Goddess of Democracy (between Brock Hall and The Nest)

8. June 4 (Tuesday): Candlelight Vigil

In memory of the thousands of students and civilians who died in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Time: 7:30pm

Location: David Lam Park, 1300 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver
