Global Joint Statement on COVID-19 [Wuhan Pneumonia]

In January 2020, a large-scale cluster infection of a respiratory infectious disease broke out in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. The virus has never been seen before, and has been genetically analyzed to be a new virus named COVID-19 [Wuhan Pneumonia] virus. The virus spread rapidly to all provinces of China, near-by countries then to more than 60 countries around the world, including the Vancouver area. As of March 8, 2020, worldwide confirmed cases had exceeded 100,000 and death toll exceeded 3,000.  The undersigned organizations jointly issue the following statement:

The Undersigned organizations call on people to maintain a good personal hygiene, wash hands frequently, and avoid crowded places and gatherings.

The COVID-19 [Wuhan Pneumonia] virus started infecting people in Wuhan in December 2019. The disease had been confirmed to be able to transmit from person to person, including medical professionals caring for the sick.  On December 30, 2019, several medical professionals, one being Dr. Li Wenliang of Wuhan posted on WeChat about 7 confirmed cases of SARS-like pneumonia and called for public awareness.  However, the Chinese Government, totally controlled by the Chinese Communist Party deleted all those WeChat messages on January 1, 2020 to conceal the emerging epidemic.  The 8 medical profession sounding early alarms were summoned and admonished by police and forced to sign an admonition acceptance letter showing regret and promising never to put such news on public forum. Dr. Li Wenliang died from the Wuhan Pneumonia on February 7, 2020.  The undersigned organizations extend the highest respect to Dr. Li and the other “Whistle Blowers” for speaking out the truth in the early stage of the epidemic.

On January 10, 2020, the People's Daily published a so-called expert remark that the epidemic was "Preventable and Controllable".  A municipal government in Wuhan even held a 40,000 person mass banquet on January 18, 2020 to celebrate the Lunar New Year.  With no preventive measures and public awareness, the epidemic spread quickly.  Tens of thousands of Wuhan residents were infected by COVID-19 [Wuhan Pneumonia] and thousands died.

Some Wuhan residents got wind of the epidemic, not from official channels, but through friends and neighbors.  Many left Wuhan.  When the government closed Wuhan city on January 23, Wuhan population had reduced to 9 million from 14 million a couple months ago.  The virus spreads with the 5 million people fled from Wuhan to every province in China, nearby countries and then around the world.

The spread of the COVID-19 [Wuhan Pneumonia] demonstrates the fundamental deficiency in China's system of government: a system that concentrates all power to a party and to a person without any balance of power, a system that restricts the free flow of information and opinion. The authorities disregarded human life and facts and suppressed factual information from medical professionals for the sake of stability and preservation of their power.  The Chinese people and the world were denied proper knowledge of the epidemic.  Without knowledge and preventive measures, the COVID-19 [Wuhan Pneumonia] spread to all China and then the world.  The epidemic is now a serious threat to the health of mankind and to the world economy.

The Undersigned Organizations strongly condemn the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party for concealing the facts about the epidemic, persecuting the early “Whistle Blowers” , blocking media coverage and delaying containment of the COVID-19 [Wuhan Pneumonia] epidemic .  We strongly demand the Chinese government and Communist Party apologizing to the countries affected by the epidemic.
